This stunning wreck called Atun Wreck iis located only 30 minutes boat drive away from Kokopo Town and even after stormy weather - is a great dive site.
Former Taiwanese tuna fishing vessel. Deliberately sunk on 1983 by the Rabaul Dive club, the wreck sits bolt upright on the ledge in about 21 m.
Very nice soft coral growth in the wheelhouse together with a very healthy black coral tree. If you have good eye you might see scorpion fish living right on the ledge. Mast rises up to within 10 m of the surface to create a very photogenic foreground.mash is covered with many different types of corals .
The ATUN is also host of macro critters such as seahorses, mantis Shrimp, nudibranch and pipefish. Many times it is truly amazing to simply stay on top Atun wreck and look out past the wall, as there are always high chances to see sharks , tuna or mackerel passing by.
Dive usually start with boat on top of the nearby reef at only 5 m depth. Then drop in and head down by sandy bottom. Keep looking out for sharks and schools of fish . then after few minutes of swim you will see ships bow as a ghostly figure . Swim closer and will start to see detail of the wreck...
Then pass between starboard side of the wreck and the wall . Then slowly start to work you way up the wreck until reach wheelhouse . Great spot for photography .
