Me and the family i was staying with in Japan (Helpex .net program ) - decided to have a day out and the same time small market for crepes , crispy fried corn , blueberry drinks , home made Jams and flour . So we arrived in this little town not far from Yamagata , Its looked very similar to any other town i seen in Japan. There market was already set up .Older Japanese ladies trying to bargain for better prices and younger ladies not giving better prices .Made me smile .Many different stands already selling stuff . They do this market every 2 weeks .So its a family day out !
We got to our market area , there were freshly made light brown tables waiting for us , really freshly made tables , you could still smell wood and feel sandy texture on the table ,it was so soft and smooth ..
We started setting up , and half way i was useless , because had no idea where / what goes , then i decided to go explore . Things to find in this market and around it :
1 . Crafts area to make them yourself for free
2.Silk factory building museum and n Vip tour .
3. Actual market place
4. Competition - scarecrow .
5. Hippie clill -out
6. Live Japanese music
Activity number 1 : Crafts area was ...
- One of them was Was 15 steps guide on the wall how to make a toy from plastic bowls , paper and glue .( see photos )
- Was making candles (They had old oil , children chokes and some kind of powder , to add and make it harden ,(I tried this and got little green candle with some smell oils in it - i chose peppermint )
- Painting of glass jars (They had lots of different jars and paints ready to go .
Activity number 2 . So i tried that .. Then i moved on exploring building itself . Turns out all this amazing building was old silk factory . I have never been in silk factory before .And by VIP tour i mean , on my own , to explore and even try everything .
I walked around in old dark brown corridors, with the little windows and green roof and felt like i`m in the horror movie or something .. Corridors were really long and had freaky colour mix .. Brown + greenish blue .. It felt like an awkward choice to me .
There were many different rooms , some still full with machines that make silk .In in all of them completely no visitors .,All doors were open and free to access . So i walked in and explored .These machines were stunning and could absolutely imagine , how it would be to see all workers around them ,To see how to make silk Amazing .
In building found even a little museum like room with photos and process of getting silk and funny thing is that no one would care . Japanese seemed absolutely used to it .
Activity number 3.Afterroom adventures i decided to see what outside there i explored an actual market . They sold so many different things in there . Like breads , jams , pipes , medicine , spices , soups , noodles and you can even make your own chair to keep and try horse soup . (I did by the way )
And lets not forget the ice-cream in the place : Asparagus ice cream ( I never dared to try it - too weird for me )
Activity number 4.And at the corner of the market i noticed scarecrows . Some of theme were incredible . There were about 15 peaces and every one was different , as far as i understood it was a competition and i have no idea who won , The best peace must be a snowman . It was so funny , looks like after a crazy car accident or something .Check the photo !
Activity number 5. Then i got back to the family market part and tried my hand in making crepes ( I wasn`t so bad , just to say )
At the end of the day (about 5 PM ) I met thi guy from one of the markets . His market was special , he sold these crazy sunglasses that would make you feel like your high when wearing , because he put some stickers or something ot top of the normal glass .Where to get hippie glasses i still dont know !
+ He was making a shisha and offering it to smoke just the on the spot .
+ He would cook a horse in a stew ..( I tried it by the end of the evening , and i must say it taste the same as beef )
+ He played this self invented music instrument . Which was something i never seen before , but sadly every time he played i some how missed it .
Very interesting character to meet .
Activity number 6 .And at the end of the evening i just chilled in table area and listened to one of the musicians sing . I was surrounded by about 30 Japanese people all around , could hear them saying " Gaiginj " .. and pointing fingers from time to time .. Must say - i felt special that i had opportunity to join Japanese family and and be in this unique place .
Lovely day and completely strange / exciting experience !
PS.- " Gaiginj " means foreigner .
And if you have had a unique experience in Japan , please share it in comments !
